Can I file a lawsuit against a person who had disrespected me through email?

I've received mails saying bad things about me personally. I actually know the person who could possibly do it. Can I file a lawsuit against him?

Can I file a lawsuit against a person who had disrespected me through email?
Well, since someone can sue McDonald's for getting fat, and someone else can sue the people whose house he tried to break into until falling through the sky light, probably. Does this make you a decent human, no, it puts you in the same category as the fat guy who blames someone else and the stupid burglar who should have broken his neck in the fall and saved everyone the problems stupidity causes. (Please don't sue me I am very poor).

I would just block the address.
Reply:Disrespect is NOT a punishable crime. Slander is however.
Reply:What is this world coming to ,get a life.
Reply:What you should do is report the abusive emails to the police??? It's called stalking and harrassment. Tell them the truth, that you are in fear for your life and safety............Good Luck..:)
Reply:Get a lawyer!
Reply:You sure can file a lawsuit...wheather it'll uphold in court....yeah...it'll be toss out with the Judge laughing..

Anyways, what are you suing for? What losses have you incurred?

It amazes me that Americans want to sue everyone for anything.

I'm sure now you'll want to sue me for this answer.
Reply:you'd have to prove injury like loss of income.
Reply:You'll never find an attorney willing to take the case. Contact police. Why don't you block the address or stop opening the mail?
Reply:for disrespect no

the printed word is libel ,and damage must be proved as well the statements printed must be proved false
Reply:if he threatens you then u go to the police

if he says something not very nice u

forget it because i thought we had freedom of speech
Reply:While "disrespect" is no crime, Harassment is. If you know who the person is, and you have told them to stop, I think you may have some kind of case.

I don't know if you can sue, but you might be able to get a restraining order, or perhaps even have the person punished for their crime (depending on where you live and whether there's currently a stink being raised in the media about online harassment.)

Unfortunately, things like harassing someone online aren't usually taken very seriously by the police and the courts, so there's also a pretty good chance your case will be thrown out. The police are usually far too busy investigating computer crimes that are involved much bigger crimes - such as drug trafficking, terrorism, child porn, and murder - and simply don't have the time, resources or manpower to investigate someone who's sending harassing emails (unless threats against your physical self are being made, at which point they'll probably take it more seriously.)

And on top of that, there doesn't seem that there's much that can really be done about it, outside of you blocking this person's email address. The court might be able to order them to stop sending you emails, but what's stopping this person from simply making a new email account and continuing to send?

Anyway, I think all you can really do is block their emails and ignore them.
Reply:'you actually know the person who could possibly do it' , is this reference to a lawyer who could possibly sue on your behalf, or is this reference to the person who you think might be sending ugly e mails to you, but you can't be entirely sure because you don't really know and now you want to know if you should/could hire a lawyer specializing in civil litigation (VERY EXPENSIVE_HOLLYWOOD EXPENSIVE) to file a case against someone you think might be sending nasty e mails to you for damages he/she could never pay . it's amazing how many people equate law, lawyers and the entire legal system with a shopping trip to the local 7-11, you kind of pop in and 5 minutes later walk out goods in hand. if you have the time, money, energy, resources, patience, money, money, money, money and money to file a lawsuit- go for it.
Reply:First all you can sure for anything people do all the time. But can you profit from the suit that is the real question. You can only profit from actual damages suffered by the actions of the person sending the E-mail. And you do not have any actual damages period. May a brused nerve. Sure you can get a lawyer for a couple grand, but you will never see your pay day at the end of the tunnel. Second this is not lible and it is not slander. Both have to be done in a public vinue this act was not. It is in a private vinue. So what exactly are you going to sue for, as the e-mail address was given to them by you. You actually ask for the contact the context was not restrictive and thus the action may see it way into court only to be thrown out for lact of cause of a law suit so you open yourself up to a law suit. Why take the risk.
