Why is sending or saving email messages so slow?

When I compose a message and click on "send" it takes 10 to 20 minutes before it actually goes out. The same thing happens if I try to save it as a draft. Once I have a draft created I can send it without any problem.

Why is sending or saving email messages so slow?
Yahoo has been doing maintenance on their sites, causing many issues for all of us. They say it won't take long to fix and thanks us for our patience. They did have a message up a few days ago.
